The bulker vessel is equipped with Tsuji deck cranes type HSDHS 3528, with SWL of 35t. x 28m. Whilst loading coal with motor grabs, the luffing winch experienced a catastrophic failure, causing the boom to free fall. Besides sever damage to the grab, the ship's structure and the rope sheave assembly at the top of the crane column, also the jib of the crane got damaged, bent and distorted.
Steel repairs of the entire crane and crane boom was entrusted to Alatas. Preparations were made to offload the jib at Singapore Anchorage and have it transported to Alatas specialized accident repair workshop ashore. Alatas Crane Design drafted the boom welding repair procedure, for which class approval was obtained prior commencing the structural steel repairs.
The repaired boom was sand-blasted, painted and outfitted with overhauled rope sheaves and grab accessories, such as grab cable, grab tugger winch and deflection pulleys and sent back on board..
The boom was then installed back to the crane column at anchorage. Besides the boom installation, Alatas also carried out other accident repairs to crane column sheave assembly, hook block and boom rest structure.
Upon completion of the repairs, the crane then was function tested and successfully overload tested, with class certificates issued..
